Newly revealed secrets contractors don't want you to know
|
1. There is rarely a real sale price in the window industry.
When a company markets a “Buy 3 windows and get 1 free” promotion it does
not really mean that you are getting a free window or even 25% off. What is the
original price of a single window? You don’t know that ahead of time. Generally,
the price of a single window is a price that they will never expect to sell it for; it is
just a starting point from which they are able drop to get to the real price they
intend to sell a window for.
2. You can not get a window installed for $189, or at least one you
would want in your home.
Here is a real world example from one of my clients that called believing they
could get a window installed for less than $200 along with another national
company pricing model. The scenario is based on 12 average sized windows
where existing windows are builder grade aluminum. This example is based on
providing a lifetime warranted vinyl replacement window that meets the
governments Energy Star Guidelines.

3. The most important day in the life of a roof is the day it is installed.
Many roofers will give you a price and tell you that you have a 25 or 30 year
warranty. While this is partially true what they don’t tell you is that the warranty
is from the shingle manufacturer and it only covers manufacturing defects. A
leading shingle manufacturer told us that about 99% of all defects are
discovered in the first 30 days of the shingles life. Generally defects are
discovered by the manufacturing plant’s quality control or by the installer as it
comes out of the wrapped bundle. Rarely will it ever make it to the roof and if it
does it will most certainly be discovered in the first year after a full round of
seasonal weather extremes.
Other things such as proper nail placement, starter strips, underlayment,
flashings and attic ventilation will truly determine the life of your roof. Only a
certified roofer will know and share this with you.
So who will be there to stand be hind your roof after it is installed. The only
warranty that matters is the warranty for the labor. Every shingle warranty is
voided in the event of an installation error. The lowest price bid will generally
have what we call a “Tail light Warranty”. That means that the labor is covered
for as long as you can see their taillights as they are pulling away from your
home.
4. You should never need to sign a contract "TODAY" to receive a
special deep discount.
We do offer a 3% convenience discount if someone is able to make a decision in
the same consultation. This saves us the cost of our time and travel to return
and we will pass those savings on to you. Many clients have shared with us how
companies have pressured them into signing a contract by dropping their pricing
as much as 30% if they would sign on the spot. That just proves that their
original price was too high to begin with.
5. Deep discounts for “Marketing Considerations” are not real.
Getting names of your friends and family, placing a sign in your yard or using
your house as a “Show House” in pictures for their marketing are not REAL
reasons companies discount a job. These are just gimmicks to pressure you to
sign a contract on the spot. Reputable companies will provide you with the
service you deserve and you will be compelled to allow us to place a sign in your
yard and you will tell all of your friends and family about your great experience
with us.
6. Big name brand windows are only OK!
When it comes to windows, the bigger brand names are good products, but
generally overpriced. The rule of thumb is if they are advertised on television,
radio or national magazines someone has to pay for that advertising expense. It
ends up being you, the consumer. We suggest you look for independent third
party endorsements such as the "Good Housekeeping" seal, "Consumer's
Digest Best Buys" or "JD Powers" customer satisfaction ratings.
